Overview

Designing in the camera, where creation on TikTok starts

This summer I got to design for TikTok Camera, where every video starts. On the Creation team, I owned new features that lower the barrier to expression, from early exploration through launch. I shaped functionality and interactions around what creators need, turned them into clear specs and edge cases for engineering, and stayed close through implementation, testing and two rounds of iteration. Alongside that, I helped shape an internal AI design-to-code tool, as both a designer using it and a contributor to it.

In-camera teleprompter

Lip-sync is one of the largest content types recorded in TikTok Camera, yet creators had to memorize every lyric. I owned the 0→1 design of an in-camera teleprompter that detects lyrics from a sound or shows a custom script. I designed everything from the reading experience to how the panel moves, resizes and shares the screen with other camera tools. It shipped on iOS and Android as a global A/B test that lifted lip-sync publishing by ~8%.

Follow-along recording

A camera tool that helps creators recreate the videos they watch. I co-designed its core interactions and how it works alongside other camera tools — more to share once it launches.

Exposure compensation

Design spotted a missing basic control in the camera, so I pushed for exposure compensation — framing the problem, designing the interaction, and bringing it to product. Then I built it myself: vibe-coding the implementation with an internal AI design-to-code tool, so engineering started from working code instead of a spec.

AI design-to-code tool

An internal tool the Creation design team uses to turn designs into working code. I identified designers’ pain points and where its capabilities fell short, then redesigned the project page toolbar for easier use. With engineering, I co-designed new features to inspect AI-generated code — element inspection, versioning, and design and stress-test reviews.

What I’m taking with me

01

Designing within a proven system

TikTok Camera is built on layers already validated by data and team consensus — effects along the bottom, a sidebar ordered by usage, entry points everywhere. On the teleprompter, finding room to improve meant first understanding why every existing piece sits where it does.

02

The details live in the states

Flows I thought were airtight still surfaced missed states and edge cases in QA review, development and sign-off. I learned to walk every step from the user’s side — and to speak up with product when I believed a different answer would serve creators better.

03

AI as the bridge to implementation

Working inside TikTok’s AI workflow showed me where AI fits best. It’s a bridge between design and implementation that lowers the cost for designers and engineers alike. In the product, it should serve the core goals of inspiring creation and viewing.
